A good kit should make the first grow easier to understand. Before comparing packaging or a headline price, think about where the tray will sit, how often you want to grow and what you will need for the second crop.
Check the tray dimensions, seed varieties, medium, care instructions, refill availability and delivered cost. Choose one or two trays around your routine, not an assumed harvest quantity.
Measure the space you will actually use
Allow space to lift the tray, water it and put it down safely. Check internal and external dimensions, whether the kit includes a catch tray, and whether a lid or lighting accessory adds height. Keep the location’s light and heat in mind.
A kit that looks compact in a photograph may not fit under your shelf. Write down your available width, depth and height before ordering.
Read the contents as a working checklist
- Tray: what is supplied, and how is drainage or water collection handled?
- Seeds: which varieties are included and how many sowings does the pack support?
- Medium: what material is supplied and does it need preparation?
- Instructions: are sowing, watering, harvest and cleaning explained?
- Extras: do you need scissors, a spray bottle, a light or another item?
One tray or two?
One tray lets you learn a complete grow before managing a second crop. Two trays can support staggered sowing, but they also need more space and attention. Two trays are not a guarantee of a continuous harvest: timing depends on the variety, conditions and how quickly you use the greens.

Look beyond the first purchase
Compare delivered kit cost and delivered refill cost separately. Work out the seed and medium needed for one sowing. Check whether replacement parts or compatible refills are easy to identify.
A recurring refill delivery only makes sense when its frequency matches your growing. Try a few crops before deciding how often a subscription would be useful. Check cancellation, delivery and seed-shipping conditions before paying.
